Shit happens.

(Original post: 2017/6/1)

But here’s the thing…

We all know this. In fact, not only do we know it, we are constantly bombarded by it. By our friends, social media, strangers, self-proclaimed gurus, counselors, psychologists… the list goes on.

What’s even better are the solutions we are given after being told that shit happens. Whether it’s what we tell ourselves, what our friends tell us, or what we hear from everything around us. It’s like… Yes. We understand. In fact, we understand so well because we know ourselves best, so don’t tell us what to do motherfucker.

And yes, there are those who let it roll off a little easier than others. One of my best friends, for example, says that he is being “cock-blocked by God.” This, as funny as it may sound to me, is his reality. It’s original, I’ll give him that. Much better than that piece-of-shit phrase It is what it is.

I hate that phrase. It’s a fucking cop-out.

I’ve hated it since I first heard it, back so many years ago. My initial reaction was Uh, no dude. It’s what you make of it. But, then again, I tend to (or try to) be in control of my life in as many events as much as I possibly can be. It doesn’t always work out, and that’s okay. It happens to everyone. Whether it’s karma, the universe, nature being a bitch, or just one of those days — you know — Murphy’s Law type shit.

And though we are constantly told to handle it — sometimes we just can’t. It’s in our nature. Our brains, whether wired correctly or incorrectly, backed up by the routine behaviors we have acquired over time, won’t allow us to handle it. I have experienced this today.

But here’s the thing though. As opposed to being in a funk of epic proportions, I decided to take advantage of the newly acquired free time. As I am writing this now, I can say I am pretty happy things turned out the way they did. I decided to turn what would be an otherwise shitty start to my day, into a productive one instead.

I’m not here to tell you what to do when shit happens. I’m not even here to give you tips just in case it does — which, let’s face it — it probably will. Instead, I am here just to share my experience and hope that it benefits you in some way. If you (whoever you are) even read this. If not though, maybe you should pray something like this:

Dear God, please stop cock-blocking me today.
